The South Dakota utility that's buying part of Aquila said its quarterly earnings slid more than 20 percent.

Rapid City, S.D. based Black Hills Corporation announced earlier this month that it would purchase Aquila's electric utility in Colorado, and its gas utilities in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa for about $940 million in cash.

Black Hills is reporting net income of $20.8 million in the last three months of 2006. That's down from $26.6 million during the same time a year earlier.

Black Hills produces electricity and natural gas, and is involved in oil and coal mining.
